I have recently become a regular reader of Mom’s Out There, a personal blog by Taylor Blue. Taylor is a freelance writer who lives in Canada with her husband and two children. Mom’s Out There focuses not only on Taylor’s experiences as a mother, but on her life experiences in general. Her sense of humor turns the ordinary events of her life into something extraordinary.Mom’s Out There dates back to May 2007. Though it is still a new blog, there is lots of great material in the archives. Taylor challenges her readers with a Question of the Day. She showcases her photographic talents by posting a Picture of the Day. You’ll find an assortment of posts on various topics – everything from recipes to interesting YouTube videos.

Taylor is an animal lover. There are photos of her own cats posted on her blog. You’ll also find lots of articles and videos of other amazing animals.

I’d like to highlight a few of my favorite posts on Mom’s Out There.

Cheesy Chicken Potato Casserole – Sounds both yummy and easy to prepare!

Swimming Cats – This video proves that cats really can swim, and they are just adorable doing it!

The Cute Kitty Reaper – This video chronicles the amazing story of Oscar, a cat who lives in a hospice. He has an uncanny ability to predict when patients will die, and he stays with them during their final hours.

The Hedgehog – This video of a cute little hedgehog is guaranteed to make you smile.

You may recall that Taylor contributed a 10 Questions post a few months ago. Be sure to check it out for more riveting information on this very talented writer. And then head over to Mom’s Out There to take a peek into the exciting life of Taylor Blue.

  1. Wow…what a great review!! I totally loved it…!!!

  2. I love the colors on that site, they really suite the genre, very mellow, girly and friendly. Check out the flowers in the header, look so cool.

Don’t get me wrong, but I think negative criticism is also good criticism. It might help Taylor make her visitors experience even better, and hence get more returning visitors and loyal readers.

So, here goes the negatives ( pretty much all in technical nature ):
    1. I don’t like how the blog scrolls indefinitely, taking ages to load… why not show just the last 10 or 15 posts and allow users to move to next page in order to read the older posts? You won’t lose pretty much anything, since people seldom scroll that far down the page to keep reading.
    2. In Firefox, the right column seems to be randomly pushed in and out of whack, some of the links even sticking out outside the page making it look unkempt.
    3. This is subjective, but to me the entries themselves would benefit from a white background, it would make for easier reading and would also draw attention to the posts.
    4. And lastly, I think in the long run the blog would benefit from having it’s own domain for sake of brandability.

Taylor, I hope you take these criticisms with a positive spin and make your blog even better.

    Good luck!

  3. Great tips, Josh! I noticed a few technical issues as well. Taylor, take them for what they’re worth.

    1. There is no link to get back to the home page. I had to edit the URL to go back to the main page.
    2. Consider turning your post titles into permalinks.
    3. Consider a more user friendly archive system.

I love your blog, Taylor, but I hope you can benefit from the suggestions. Have a great day!

  4. You know…since I changed it over to a new template I have been thinking about those problems. I might just have to go with a blogger template again. I think these problems have been going on long before. I have to type in everything for the archives and it takes time I don’t have. And the perma link thing bugs me too.

Thanks for the hints. I think you guys are just confirming what I already knew… Thanks.

  5. Tish you came by…don’t worry…I am going to have my header back…i can’t get rid of that. It will be back up by next week. Thanks for the comment though!

  6. Taylor - You’re welcome! The new digs are awesome! Can’t wait for the header!

  7. I know…I am so glad that you guys told me what you did…I have been thinking and thinking about it… :)

  8. Another great blog to add to my feed reader. Love it already.

  9. thanks for stopping by Loretta…I can’t wait to see you around more!
