10 Questions with Kyle of Rather Be Shopping

1. Describe your blog in five sentences or less.
Yeah, I am a guy who would “rather be shopping” (insert joke here), but my blog is all about saving money when not only shopping but in everyday living. As a father of 3 small kids and living on a tight budget, I know all the secrets of frugal living and making your paycheck go as far as possible. My wife is a stay-at-home Mom and I would not want it any other way. I blog about online coupons, frugal ways to save money, shopping tips, and of course adventures and mis-adventures of raising 3 active kids.
2. Link us to one post from your blog that best defines who you are.
10 Frugal Summer Fun Ideas
3. What sets you apart from other bloggers?
My charm of course! But seriously, I think that every good blogger is different yet the same. Good bloggers, in my opinion, speak from the heart and do not come off as fake or self serving. This is what makes them popular and keeps people coming back to read what they have to say. This is what I strive for when writing my blog.
4. When and how did you first discover blogging?
I discovered blogging a couple years when I found a number of funny and interesting blogs that I came became instant fans of. I never had the gumption to try it myself until recently. I am glad I took the chance and started my own.
5. What is your biggest pet peeve related to blogging or the internet?
People that take your work and claim it as their own. I actually had a guy recently who used one of my articles on his site and said he was the author. Problem was he left my by-line and link to my site included in the article! This is how I found it. Not the sharpest tool in the shed apparently.
6. Name one plugin, blogging widget, or service that you can’t live without.
The only thing I can’t live without is Fruity Pebbles. With that said, plugins that I do like a lot include Sociable and Akismet. Sociable is a great way to get your blog posts shared to others. Pretty cool.
7. If you could choose anyone, living or dead, to write a guest post for your blog, who would it be and why?
Bill Cosby. His outlook on life and fatherhood have always served as an inspiration to me. I know his post would be funny, honest, and forthright.
Plus, I might be able to score a deal on some pudding pops for the kids.
8. How has blogging made you a better person?
Blogging has made me a better person because it makes me take a deeper look at the things that are truly important in my life.
9. What are your tips for becoming a better blogger?
- Blog about what you have a passion for. If you do this, your passion will come out in your words.
- Don’t pander to other people in your blog.
- Pass the love. If you find a blog or post that really strikes you as informative or above the fold, don’t keep it to yourself, let your readers know about it. Who knows, maybe someday another blogger will do the same for you.
10. Name one great blog that you read on a regular basis. What makes it unique?
I always enjoy the going-ons over at The Consumerist. The comments section often provides more entertainment than the actual posts. Good stuff.

How Cool! Thanks guys for posting my 10 questions. It was fun.
Great answers Kyle!! :)
Nice answers, Kyle. And even though we’re technically competitors (the coupon biz is chock full of crazy sharks I tell ya!), it’s nice to find someone else out there who’s having a good time and sharing some honest personal stories via a blog, rather than just pimping the latest hot deal.
Andrew – could not agree more. That is why I liked your blog so much and to have you say that about what I am doing means a lot, thanks.
Kyle, don’t worry. Tempted as I may be, I won’t start cranking up the Lion King soundtrack and belting out “Can you feeel the loooove tonight?” ;)
LOL – I appreciate you having some control over your temptations….I would be OK with the Barney theme though.
